yes I know all the govt. regs. too well with semi's and tractors, and we have thought of going all hiway fuel, but we consume off road 15-1 ratio in favor of off road so it really isn't worth it to us. They wouldn't need so much of our money for road repairs if they quit pouring that liquid salt on the hiways because people can't drive slower on ice.But that is anouther subject and my opinion.
We had a guy just get busted here, he was in our companies truck, just didn't realize what he was buying. I know he didn't do it on purpose, he wasn't buying the fuel, he was putting it on the company card, the pumps both said diesel, the off road sticker was on the bottom and he didn't see it. I'm not sure what the fine was, but it wasn't cheap. He didn't have to get towed, they gave him 24 hours to get it out.
A farmer 30 miles from here was running off road in all his trucks, dot. pulled one over found off road in it. So they started pulling all his trucks over he got wind of it and had his trucks start dumping fuel on the ground and fuel up with hiway. Dot found out about this somehow and then it became an EPA. issue along with IRS.,hazmat, state and local govt. I am sure he had some big problems.......and fines..
I saw earlier it was mentioned that ATF turns your fuel red, it really doesn't turn it that red, but even if they throw a fit, just keep your fuel reciepts you possibly can and it will prove that you've been buying taxed fuel.
A guy a know got busted for running red here in Texas, it was a 3500 fine, plus they taxed him for every gallon of fuel that he mathmatacly used over the past 3 (maybe 5) years, when it was all said and done he was 8 grand in the hole.
Even with reciept's you will probably have to make a court apperance, so that means time off from work and possibly a lawyer with you.
Yes transmission fluid is a good cleaner, and the price is right.
But when you start thinking about the extra hastle and expense it may cost you, Diesel Kleen or one of the other addatives is a very cheap alternative.
Red fuel....well I can buy highway fuel for over a year for what one fine would cost.
And I seem to get stopped a couple times every summer.

curisoity has got the best of me, how can they even get a sample from a pidkup? I have a terrible time draining a tank when I need to change the fuel pump in the tank, of course mine is a gas rig but the diesel tank set up looks the same to me.. So do they drain a guys filter or use spaghetti hose or what? these guys must have way too much time on their hands...
Pull the fuel filter. IDI is right in the front of the engine.
They don't even have to do that on the 7.3, they will crack the water seperator valve just a hair and catch a few drops in a cup and look at it. The only time they do that around here is when getting an inspection.
The standard test involves dipping an opaque plastic tube in the tank, putting Your finger over the end of the tube and removing it. Along with the small amount of fuel that is in the tube. Off Road Fuel will be immediately noticeable.
I've been field tested 6 times in the past 3 years.
The test here involves a rather stiff tube about 1/8" diameter, reminds me of a tube about the size that comes with a mechanical oil pressure gauge or air shocks.
But since it is rather stiff, it slides right down the filler tube.
And like I said above, here it is colored slightly yellow green, so any red in the fuel makes the tube look black.
The Mountain Dew colored ULSD fuel is about the same color as the tube, so it shines bright.
When the do checks here, you are driving down the road and will see signs "Fuel check prepare to stop".
They dip every diesel tank from a Diesel VW Rabbit to a semi tank that comes down the road.
