When I accelerate my oil presure gose up at first then all of a suden drops out it does the same thing if I'm sitting stilland rev the engine up. I don't get it did my sensor go bad? It seems like I've read about this problem befor. This is the set up I have for my oil presure sensor. http://www.thedieselstop.com/content...re%20Gauge%202
Well that article pretty much explains most of it. What pressure sensor are you using on the truck? the one that came with the 6.9? or the one that came from your 7.3? If you are using the 6.9 style sensor, it will read low in your year of truck. Even mine will read slightly below 1/3 on the gauge after a good hard run and idling. When cold it can go as high as 3/4.
Before loosing too much sleep over this, you should do a simple check of the oil pressure with a real mechanical gauge to see what your oil pressure really is.
Unless major is wrong with these engines, you won't usually loose oil pressure without prior warning. The factory oil pumps don't go out usually either, in fact I've heard the melling replacements are so bad lately that its not even worth getting a new one. I reused my oil pump when I rebuilt my engine.
EDIT: I also had a situation where the gauge would consistently loose pressure reading when under heavy load. Finally got bad enough that I pulled over on the side of the freeway to have a look. Turns out it was a loose connector on the pressure sensor. The engine would move on the mounts and vibrate just right to cause a bad contact under load, but would predictably return to normal when I backed off. I squeezed the connector down a little so it was tight on the sensor stem again, and all was back to normal after that.
I new there was a reason I used a mechanical guage.
George when I had the shop and installed a new engine it always had my mechanical guage on it at start up. This saved a new 350 once when one of my hands left the oil pump drive off.
I used the oil sender I had been using on the 7.3 the one the article says to use. I'm not worried about hurting the engine My 7.3 had some injectors go bad and I was driving around with under 7psi at idle for a while and it didn't hurt it. But IIRC Dave S. had a few sendrs go bad and they were acting simular to this. I would add an mechanicle gauge to my truck there is no where to put it in my truck where I could easily see itthat would not be very presidential looking to put it in the most politicaly correct way I can. I'm going to hook up a manuale gage tomarow and see what it reads. And I used the pump off my 7.3 as the 6.9 was rear sump.
Like the one in my sig? Some how I dont think I would be able to see it way over on the passanger side. I also don't like the idea of a line full of oil comming from my turbo into my cab if it ever ruptured that would be a bad day. The only place I've thought of to put it is where Ghunt put his in the litle cuby in the dash that is just siting empty problem is it would be very hasardus to look at it while driving.
To quote larry the cable guy and more recently Dodge/Cummins
"Lord I appologise for that one, and please be with the starving Pygmies down in New Guinea, Amen."
What were the fule lines for I know you werent driving somethisng with a 24v cummins with a VP-44 where you need the gauge for the lift pump.
Yea but I need something for my pigmys to do anyway.
On my 86 I have the oil pressure guage, water temp and pyro mounted on the dash easy to see but looks kinda presidental.lol. Someday I will figgure something else out not sure weather to go pillar or build some sort of panel in the roof where I could mount a switch panel and cb too.
If i can find a small enogh gauge I know where i want to mount it, thers room between the botom of my apiller pod the dash and the door but I'll have to see what i can find for a mount. I love my Apillar pod I didn't paint it and mouted it with the hard ware that mounts the plastic that is already there instead of how Auto meter said to and it looks almost factory. the interior is gray but the bezle around the factory gauges and CD player are black so it worked out well.
I tryd to rep David but was told to spread the love more. I pulled the conector and squeezed it put it back on and now its fine.
Good deal I keep coming up with an overhead console in my mind, just haven't put any energy into seeing if it is feasible yet. Also thought about building a complete dash incertand eliminatine the factory guages altogether.
