I was wondering what the diferences were between the c4, c6, and aod transmitions. Is one better than the other? And how do you tell the diferences between them?
The C-4 has a removable bellhousing and was only mated to small-blocks.
The C-6 bellhousing is all part of the casting and can be identified by the shape of the pan as seen in this link <http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=superior-transmission.com/images/superior/high%2520performance/513102cnts.jpg&imgrefurl=http://superior-transmission.com/products/high_performance/c6posi_cnts.htm&h=391&w=400&prev=/images%3Fq%3DC-6%2Btransmission%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26 ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26sa%3DN>
The c-6 was used behind all Ford V-8 motors up until around 1992.
The AOD has a square pan with two of the corners kind of angled. It has a one-piece casting also and was only mated to small-blocks.
just trying to figure out what is the best for my rig. I have a 55 f-100 that has a brand new c4 in it, hooked to a 289. I was trying to figure out which one, if any was better than the others. I have no idea when it comes to trannies and what is best fo what.
I would go for the C-4 or the AOD. If you don't mud run or tow with the truck a C-4 uses less engine HP to run the trans than a C-6 does.
Not sure about the hp consumed by a AOD, but I would assume being a small-block trans. that it also would need less than a C-6. Plus it would be nice to have an overdrive.
Hi Ravin, I find people asking how to ID trannies by their oil pans. So I've added a page that shows some Ford transmission pans with some text info. http://pages.prodigy.net/kennethl6/_wsn/page8.html Give it a look.
