This past week my truck has been having issues with rough starts. I'm not sure if it's fuel related or glow plug related. What happens is after it sounds like the engine is started it spits and sputters for about 2 seconds and dies. It also spits out some black smoke with it. In order to get the truck strarted I have to mash the skinny pedal and rev it up for about 5 seconds to keep it running. This also dumps out some black smoke.
This just happened one day out of the blue. It started fine a couple times after I fueled up. This only happens when the engine is cold (as in: cooled down). The outside temp is 50-70*.
Mileage is about 82k w/ 15k on the block as it was rebuilt by Ford. Also using full synthetic oil.
Never heard of it happening on a 6.0, but I have a loader with a bad injector that causes hard cold starts where you have to do the exact same thing (rev it up to keep it running and it smokes pretty bad) once its warmed up its fine. Just my .02 though.
Do you have a block heater? You could try plugging it in and seeing if that fixes it. Would rule out glowplugs if it didn't.
Ill try the block heater next time I can park near an outlet. Thanks. Not out of warranty since I have a mod friendly dealer but it is close to my 5 year mark.
Pull the egr valve and have a look at it.I bet it is crusted up hanging open.If it's deleted I am at a loss, a bad injector and cold start will give white smoke.FICM is next IMHO.
How old is the valve, the spring is 30 or 32 lbs and when it's done its done.Black smoke on start up is half burnt fuel in a cold cylinder witch makes me think it's too rich or not enough oxygen. Bad valve or fugged FICM.IMHO
I was having very similar problems with my 04 f-350.I went to my dealer to get the truck scanned for problems, nothing came up,I just hadn't put the latest flash on the truck yet [inductive heat flash for the injecters].The tech put it in, WHAT A DIFFERENCE all my cold start problems went away.
After it has set overnight, I would pull the glow plug relay connector and try to start it. If you get the same response as with the glow plug relay connector plugged in, then I would say you have a bad glow plug relay. For this problem to start (no pun intended) all of a sudden, indicates a component degrade or failure like the glow plug relay.
