What is this? (pic)

Hi guys, I was poking under the hood of my truck today and noticed this. i was wondering what this thing is? is there supposed to be a hose connected at the end? it is a 1995 f250 with the 5.8l. sorry for some basic questions but i am trying to learn, and getting a lot worse gas mileage recently and so any help would be appreciated.

that's the air intake muffler for your smog pump. no hose, stays like that. some trucks have them on the pass inner fender

it sure could, but you would probably notice the engine running poorly as well. Not sure if that is something that could be a gradual problem but i've always heard about them going all at once

it is weird, like my gas mileage suddenly changed to 8.5 mpg no matter how i drive it. i just put a new o2 sensor in and there are not any vac lines loose. i am getting kind of frustrated because i would like to get to the bottom of the problem.

Best suggestion, pull the codes first to find out if the computer sees something wrong before you throw parts at the truck.

The thing in the picture is the air bypass outlet, not the inlet, but either way, there is nothing that is supposed to attach to that open end.

If the mpg is really that bad, I would do a tune up on it air filter, fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc.

the truck got a whole tune up about 20k ago. When i pulled codes today i got code 172. could that code be caused by a leaking exhaust manifold? my passenger side exhaust manifold just started leaking. i was getting the real bad 8.5mpg even before it started leaking though. any help is appreciated.

try removing the cat, and see how it runs. I thought my 89 351 had power when i got it, took off the huge freakin cat, and OMG did the engine wake up!

Offtopic, is that truck MAF, I've just never seen one in real life, and your 95 doesn't look like my grandfather's 92 351W that I work on.

Jr, I'm getting the same feelin looking at that pic of a MAF 351W as when the first I opened the hood on a Gen 1 7.3 PSD after working on 7.3 IDI, its like a freaking space ship landed in the hood.
