My 05 has 70K, and at low speeds it will squeak like a rotating squeak sound. I don't think its the brakes, they work fine and it isnt a brake sound. Is it my CV axles? As I pick up speed it stops or whatever. It does not always do it, just frequently though. Any ideas? Thanks, this site is the best!-Derek.
I knew it was something related to that, how does it go bad? I drove the Expy from WA state to Indiana in late NOV going I-90 through Utah and Montana. A drive I do not recommend after Fall, the Rockies get really nasty especially at night. The truck did fine, maybe water? Thanks.
I was just reading somewhere else, can you replace the U joints on an 05? I read that the factory made no ring clip connections on those shafts, that I might need to buy an entire shaft?
Until mid 05, they also did not paint alot of parts under the vehicle to save money, they rust fast. Can I lube the U- Joints? I know on older vehicles you can lube up alot of fittings on the drive shafts and linkage. I can't crawl under to look, my shoulder was dislocated on Apr 4th ( motocross). Thanks again, need help!
Usually when a u-joint has started squeaking the damage is done and it's too late to save it. If the joint has a grease fitting you can try and grease it, but you're just delaying the inevitable task of changing it.
I'm not aware of no ring clips for the u-joints for the 05s. If that is true, then most likely the u-joints are held in with injected plastic. Once the old joint is pressed out, you can remove the plastic fragments and use the ring clip that come with the new joint.
How much does it usually cost to replace a u-joint? My truck is still making this noise, squealing rotating sound from under the truck. Where is the best place to take it to get a fix? Thanks!
I've no idea what a shop would charge since I've always changed my own. As far as where to take it, probably the same place you've gone for other repairs. It's a fairly simple task for a shop to do on a lift.
I have access to a lift, and all the tools that I would need. Is it fairly simple as long as I have a manual? I would rather do it myself and not pay a shop for a simple task. I have done other work on cars , how much time is involved with it? Thanks!
Figure about 2 hours per driveshaft. The u-joints are easier to change in the front one, but the DS is harder to remove. The rear DS comes out easier, but you have a double joint to deal with at the front of the shaft, making for a more difficult time in changing the joints.
