I hate squeaks and rattles, and so far my 2003 4x4 SCrew has been alright until recently.
First, I have noticed a squeaking/chirping sound coming from the rear driver's side. It seems to occur at all speeds, and especially when going down bumpy roads. Braking seems to diminish the noise a little. Went underneath with a rubber mallet and started tapping on stuff to replicate the sound. No luck on the big squeak, but I did fix a small squeak on the e-brake line/linkage (the main squeak continues). It's hard to describe...any thoughts from someone cursed with the same problem?
Second, and it may be linked to the same problem, but I often get this clunking sound from the rear end as I am pulling into a parking spot or something when I tap the brakes. It does not affect the braking, it just sounds like someone is banging on a hollow pipe with a small hammer.
It's easier to ask than go through the postings. Word.
The first one sounds like the rear brakes, the warning tab could be scraping the rotor making the squeaks. The second one sounds like maybe a u-joint starting to go. good-luck!!!
Chirping when you hit bumps could be your rear shocks. This happened to my front ones then it stopped after a while. Then the rear ones started doing it. I reckon it will stop soon. Check your tailgate too.
I'll go ahead and check the shocks...don't know if I can wait for it to go away though. Thanks for the tip, and I'll check the tailgate as well. I have a feeling the brakes may have something to do with it because I tugged on the e-brake cable, and noticed the linkage arm that connects the cable to the brake housing seemed to have play in it on both sides, and it was making a tapping noise as I moved it back and forth.
Holy crap I thought I may have been the only one with this problem in my 03 supercrew. The squeak I hear is like a rotatioal thing...I roll the truck forward its slow I tramp on it its way louder and embarassing. I have had 2 friends tell me they think its a ujoint going bad so Im buying a pair also I noticed the rearend seal is weeping so when the shaft is out I replace that too. I did have the shock squeak over speed bumps but it has since stopped. After reading some of the replies you got I will be popping off the back brakes too. The clunk you talk about do you turn off the overdrive when you just bombing around town I heard you shouldnt have it on if you truckin around at less than 80km/hr (yes Im in Canada) I notice if I forget to turn it off I sometimes get a little thump when cruising at lower speeds. Ill be back to look at this post a little more often to see how your making out good luck I know I cant stand the noise anymore!!
I have a 2001 F-150 scab. The u-joints went dry after 70k and made the sqeak you describe. They were tough to remove, had to heat them and pound on them. There was not a drop of grease for at least 10 miles in any direction of them!!! The rear was really bad.
I have a 2002 s-cab, my ujoints went at about 85,000 miles, that was the squeek.
I also get a clunk/rattle over bumps, sounds like it is in the rear end, I will check the shocks.
I also get a strange growling noise from the rear disk brakes when I apply with some force. It doesnt do it with light application, only when I press hard. anyone else????
some people have suggested pads and hardware, they have been replaced...
For the clunk/rattle check the u-bolts holding the leafs to the axle. For the brakes, check the emergency drum brakes inside the read discs. They are a pain in the butt! On mine the cable came off the right pawl and the whole assembly was a wreck when I opened it up.
