Just because the prefixes are D9 (1979) and D3 (1973), that doesn't mean these were the only years they were used.
EVERY year, Ford used new ID prefixes, but the facts are...the same basic axles were used 1973/79, and for the rear, thru 1985.
Bottom line: ID prefixes and especially...part number prefixes cannot be used to ID what years the parts fit.
Ford updates 10's of 1000's of part numbers EVERY year.
If...for example, you needed a 1932 Ford lug nut, the part number today is E8AZ-1012-A.
The original part number was B-1012.
Ford replaced that with: B-1012-A; COAZ-1012-A; C9AZ-1012-A; E6DZ-1012-A; and finally E8AZ-1012-A!
