The story behind that is that three companies used to make "jeeps." Henry Ford hated the ****** company which like him was producing the vehicles. Along withth eproduction contract was a clause that said the manufacturer was responsible for replacing defective parts.
Henry Ford in his typical stinky frugality cast a script "F" on every piece, nut and bolt of every jeep they produced so he could prove that some broken parts had not come from the *****'s vehicles and thus not get stuck replacing them.
I'm sure you know more about it than I do so correct me if I'm wrong or there's more!!!!!!
PS Bob, does the sales literature have a web site?
I have heard tell that Henry Ford truck the F on all the parts because the government would not let him put Ford script on the tailgate and told him that it had to have a *****'s marking because they approve the ****** prototype for the world War Jeep. From what I've been able to learn forward produced 270000 of them.
I figure you would know the answer to my question. I finally found some stakes that fit my pockets. Now I'm ready to start building the racks and I noticed the bottom board is wider than the top boards. Do you know the dimensions of the bottom and top boards/ from the picture it looks like the bottom is a 2x12 and the tops are 2x6.
I don't know for sure but I think the bottom board might be 1x8 and the others 1x4. And probably a full 1 inch and a full 4 and 8 inches. Definitely not a 2 by.
You are in luck, cause I just drug home a 12'' ford stake bed today with all stakes and original hardware the bottom board is 8'' dressed pine and the other 3 are 6'' . I know they are original ,the boards are riveted on from the factory ,I will have to cut the rivets and replace boards with carriage bolts. the boards are dreesed dimension 7 1/2 x3/4 and 5 1/2 x 3/4 If you go with oak that would be plenty strong but I may thicken my boards up a little 7/8ths or 1'' 2'' thick is going to get really heavy. Hope that is some help

Thanks, Abe. After I started laying things out I knew the boards must be 1x. But I didn't think about the boards being a true dimension. Thanks for the response.

Hello, I realize this is an old thread but, I have a 9' Ford block letter script bed that I want to make into a 12'. Could someone let me know the number and spacing of the cross supports on a 12' ? And if there are more than on a 9' bed (which has 6 total) does anyone have internal cross pieces for sale?
Thanks, Chuck Brandt
1966 Ford N-600
1957 Ford F-350 Definitely needs to be longer.

I have this but it doesn't specify the placement or number of the internal cross members of the bed. But I can tell I need to add about 1' between the wide stake pockets.

I appreciate your drawings but I was thrown off by this statement "These drawings are for a 9 foot bed but you can adjust it for a 8 and 12 foot bed."
And the dwg file appears to be missing at the moment.
Thanks, Chuck
Yeah, the bed is the one I have on my F-4.. I thought it was 12 foot. It's been a long time since I looked at the drawings and about as long since I looked at the truck. It's sitting in a shed at the back of the farm buried under a bunch of stuff. I'll have to check out to see what the problem is with the .dwg file.
Finally getting back to my project. Curious if anyone has pictures or a resource on how the mount was configured for the spare tire under the script flatbeds.
