Help me please!!! converting engine 03-05!

Hey everyone!
I need help pleeeeeeeease! My truck (03 F350 PS 6.0L - dually) has been at the dealership since the week before Christmas awaiting a heart transplant. I got a newer '05 6.0L to put in it. The service manager is now saying that it can't be done because they don't know what processor they need???????? This seems a little far fetched to me, since when does FORD not know what parts will work for what vehicles? (He said he has had Ford engineers come out and they don't know either)

He said the processor for the '03 won't work with the '05 engine because the '05 has extra drivers, the '03 isn't big enough to fit all of them. However, they have to find the right processor for specific wheel base, etc. Maybe I'm stupid but why can't they get a processor for my exact truck in '05 model???

Please help me! This guy is trying to talk me into just buying a new engine from them for $12k, when I have a perfectly good one right there at his shop.

Thanks guys!

At some point Ford has changed from the EEC-V to a newer style, I think PPC or something along that. Engines that need the PPC wiring and modules will be a pain to make work with the EEC-V. This is probably what they mean by drivers.

It's my guess though, that pulling all of the sensors/injectors/solenoids and replacing them with 2003 model parts would make the swap a little easier over cross breeding the brain. Try asking the service man if you could use it as a long block for the swap rather than a turn key.

Thank for your post

We have beaten our heads with this. We have suggested that to the guy and he insists that the 2003 parts aren't compatible with the 2005 engine. "The injectors are a different dimension," for instance.

I can't fathom the thought that "Ford Engineers" don't know how to make the stupid thing work. I really feel like smoke is being blown or someone just doesn't know what the heck they are doing.

Thread moved to the 6.0 forum - these guys will definitely help you out.

To me, it sounds like the typical differences that we V10'ers tell people who want to put a 3-valve V10 (2005-up) into a 2-valve chassis (1999-2004) - the electronics for the dash cluster, ABS, airbag, etc, are all different for 2005-up (CAN bus), while the 2003-2004 trucks are an earlier electronics setup. So, the PCM is completely incompatible.

It sounds fishy that they can't use the 2003 injectors and sensors, but ... these guys in the 6.0 forum will definitely know the differences between the years.

Good luck!

I think it would be best to contact one or more of the sponsors of this forum who specializes in diesels, and they should be the best experts on swaps , compatibality, and what works and what does not.

LOL thanks Krewat, I thought my post got deleted! I appreciate you moving it though.

SOMEONE out there has had to have done this before. I just can't accept that it can't be done.

So frustrating...

They are and so are the glowplugs, for the 2004 model year I believe they made then shorter by 1.2 mm. If you were to install the older, longer ones on updated engine, you may as well buy yourself a new block.

The only way to fix this is to get an '03 engine. These engines changed so much over the years, some parts are not compatible with other model years. (Especially after the 6.4 commonization in January of 2006.) It's not like the 7.3 where there were no differences between the parts for a 1999.5-2003 truck. You may be able to get away with swapping a few parts from the '05 over to the '03, but there's no telling.

OK well as of now I have someone comparing VIN #'s on my truck and the donor truck, hopefully he will have a possible solution.

Either way this ends up going I am probably going to be selling/trading this truck and getting some other model.

I will post the results to the findings once I hear about it.
Have a wonderful day everyone and see you all tomorrow.
*puffs black smoke at everyone.... then breaks down*
