Time to change the U-joint!?
Put 3,000k's on it and I have a knock in the front right. If I come out of 4x4 and back up in 2wd to unlock the auto hubs, then drive away, all is fine, but when I stop and turn (90 degrees) then straighten up I have a knock/rattle from the front/right side, it eventually goes away with speed. At highway speed it seems perfect.
It's somewhat irregular. Think it's a u-joint? or something else expensive?
Never replace a u-joint before, but the Haynes manual makes it look like an average job. Just curious if this is common on these trucks or if I lucked out?
Wonder if the auto hub is possibly sticking and not fully disengaging?
Any ideas/feedback would be grealy appreciated!
Thanks,
AJ
Just remember when changing u-joints, not to *crank down* the retaining bolts on the straps, or else buy girdles if you like to over tighten everything. Chiltons should offer torque specs for this that should be followed. If not, then use locktight and tighten as much as will not crush the bearings.

Does that mean after backing up & unlocking, THEN you come to a stop & turn, THAT's when it starts knocking?
Or does it mean you shift out of 4 but DON'T back up and then you stop & turn and it knocks?
