I just confirmed that my 35" x 13.5" x 20" tire / wheel combo will fit snugly in the stock spare tire well with no modifications. It is more visible then the stock bicycle tires in place but I don't think there should be any off road clearance issues.
My concern is the limitations of the cable winch with a bigger wheel and tire that weighs in at 116#.
Does anyone know if that is putting too much stress on the winch components?
It would be wise to have extra insurance with an additional lock and chain or a cable lock, etc because the factory cables corrode or rust and eventually separate by the bottom end. I once saw one fall from a truck doing 65 on the expressway and bounced about 20 feet in the air. Could be fatal if conditions were all in place.
If the winch and cable are in good condition with no rusting or fraying it will hold the weight fine. See the following link for a post on a custom spare tire carrier.
