I have a 1995 f350 with a 7.3 and I replaced the oil pump that runs the injectors and the motor is consuming three gallons of oil a day. I talked with a couple of mechanics and they said to check the fuel to see if the fuel is dark. It was so they thought the o-rings on the injectors between the high pressure oil and fuel were leaking. I removed the head on the passenger side and replaced all o-rings on all four injectors. I put everything back together and there is no change on the oil consumption. Does anyone have any ideas.
I removed the head because the mechanic that i took it to couldn't remove the glowplug on the rear cylinder, so I took this route. on this side i had three stock injectors and one aftermarket. the three stock injectors had ripped o rings between the oil and fuel. the aftermarket one had the new single o-ring where the stock injectors had one small round and 1/3 of a square oring left. I have read that the ipr valve should be replaced when the pump is replaced. i was going to try that before i removed the driver side head. Iwould rather remove the head than possibly suffer the hydralock situation.
Is it possible for all seven o-rings to leak all of a sudden, or has the introduction of the reman oil pump increased the potential for the leak over. Have you heard of this situation before. thanks for your time.
Its possible its due to the new pump. It doesn't take much of a leak to cause an issue though. If some were bad ont he side you have done the other side will need replacement too.
The IPR (Injector Pressure Regulator) valve controls the volume/pressure that the HPOP (High Pressure Oil Pump) puts out. Unless your IPR was bad you do not need to replace it with a pump change, just install new o-rings on it before putting it in the new pump. Also the IPR is very touch as far a dirt or lint goes so keep it clean and do not lay or wipe it with a rag.
Also as for the drivers side injector o-rings, I would just pull the injectors not the head. A down and dirty (not officially approved) way to remove the oil/fuel from inside of the cylinder after you pull injectors is to bump the engine over (remote start switch works best). This will shot (and I do mean shot) all of the fluid out of the cylinders through the injector holes so place a couple of towels, old blanket, etc over the head first, or you'll have fluid all over the hood and side of your truck.
