2003 expo, 5.4L, 70k mi., had engine sputtering and DTC "#7 cylinder misfire" and long cranking before start 4/6/09. Changed all plugs, boots, springs and #7 COP on 4/7/09. First day started right up at turn of the key. Now cranking 7 to 9 seconds before starting but no "check engine warning" yet. Once running and warm, if you were to turn it off 5 to 10 minutes and try restarting it fires right up at turn of the key. Changed fuel filter when original problem of long cranking started back in Oct 2008 which didn't cure long cranking before start-up. Any suggestions? Thinking injectors, fuel pump (where is it and how much of a PITA is it to change or how do you check it out?)
They are multiple ways to turn the key, if you bring the top towards you, you go into an electric only mode. If you turn it one click away from you, its in the ON position, another click for driving, and another for cranking, by on, he is asking if you turn it 1/3 of the way, or do you just put it from off to crank without waiting.
Try turning the key to "on" for a few seconds before cranking and see if the truck fires up quicker. Your problem is most likely due to fuel pressure bleeding off when the truck sits for a while. Try leaving it in on for a few seconds and let me know what happens.
I am a new person to the world of cars, but my guess would be the EGR valve being unclogged helps create a little pressure in the engine when it is starting, but not so much that it backs up when done cranking?
You also could have a injector sucking AIR, That is what I had when all was said and done! My EXP. sometimes will set for a week I get right in and start it up NEVER wait, not a problem! shouldn't have to wait at all.
