I've decided to put a triple deuce carb set up on my flattie. The Edelbrock manifold will take Demon, Holley, or Weber carbs. My engine guy says Weber are the best for performance, but he knows performance isn't my biggest priority, so he is suggesting Holly for best availability of parts....
Two questions for you guys...
1) Do you agree? Or should I go with the Weber?
2) Where do I find the Holley carbs?
I've done some preliminary searching on the net, but no luck. I also admit I don't know exactly what I am looking for other than 2 bbl, 3 bolt pattern.
there pricey for new ones. speedway is reproducing the Stromsburg’s they also sell the whole setup with the demons. you need a primary carb and two secondary’s the secondary’s have different base plates there’s no idle mixture or choke linkage on them
You can find a bunch off holleys and try rebuilding them.I'm not sure were you would find the bases for the hollys. the hollys your looking for are 97s or stromburg 97s or 94s would allso work
I have a buudy that has used the triple setup on flatties many times and he is not really concerned with the performance but with the look. He always plugged off the secondary carbs and just used the primary. 95% of people do not even realize it and it saves tons of tinkering time and you get the looks. Just an opinion, good luck.
THree carbs on a flathead looks great. They usually don't run great though, without a lot of tuning and tinkering. Stromberg 97's are the carbs usually used on flatties......a single 4barrel (small) works best IMO, much more reliable. Good luck, T/M
Old 97s and 94s are notorious leakers around the throttle shaft. I don't know if anyone is making new replacement throttle plates for them, but if so they are likely to be more expensive than a whole carb. Trying to properly jet 3 carbs that came off 3 different engines can be an exercise in futility, it has brought many a strong man to his knees! IMHO the best would be the Demon as it would come already properly jetted and made to work together, bolt them on and go. (one caveat: My brother is running a Demon racing carb on his drag car and he says it's nearly impossible to get thru to Barry Grant and his boys for tech support)
Vintage Speed sells new or rebushed throttle plates for 94's, that is essential for a good-running triple setup. There are lots of folks running 3x2's on flatties on the street. Once you get them dialed in, it's not a problem. There is also a lot of BS out there, some "famous name" individuals have given bad advice about removing the power valves on the secondaries, wild numbers for jet sizes, etc. IMO dual 2's are a better setup, if you're not too far down the road, consider that.
Personally I'd use 94's, not because I love them (I don't, at all) but because of the wealth of tuning info available, and they cost 1/2 of Strombergs. There was a post on the HAMB a while back questioning whether the new Demons would all fit (they are bigger).
I bought both my Holley 94's for my 2x2 setup rebuilt off Ebay. All I did was install extended throttle shafts from Vintage Speed. Both have worked flawlessly so far. Didn't pay more than $100 a piece for them, maybe I was lucky. The Holley 94s have parts readily available and are pretty simple as far as carbs go. You will need to be careful about running too much fuel pump pressure. I had to add a fuel regulator to drop it to 2.5 lbs to stop the leaking others have noted.
I have 3 94s on my flattie, mainly because the I found a manifold at a good price. I also found 2 NOS carbs on ebay here in the UK.
I just fired up this motor for the first time this week, it's running on the centre carb with the others blanked off, I will experiment with 2 or 3 carbs with a progressive linkage in the future. I'm using the mallory distributor with mechanical advance.
You will also need to think about your generator or alternator, there are offset brackets available or I used a small alternator off a Kubota digger on a home made bracket.
I have read some less than favourable reviews on the Speedway 97s (I think it was on the HAMB) I know guys who are running the new 97s made in the UK that are very happy with them or as has been said parts are available to rebuild both
Don't buy the Speedway ones - check out the concensus on the HAMB...
