85w-140 in the transfer case.

As for the transmission you can use either but IMO you are going to want to use all of one or the other. IF you dont know what is in there then you would want to have it flushed rather then just dropping the pan and then re-filling.

EDIT: After doing a quick search it looks like Mercon is done as of mid 2007. All applications using Mercon can use Mercon V.

1978 C6 transmission uses the Mercon ATF. Mercon V is what you need. Do NOT use Type A or Type F!

Transfer case: Use either SAE 50W motor oil, or 80W90 gear oil.

Watch out for "pink stink," the burned odor that indicates trouble inside an automatic transmission.

So this is what my dad was talking about?

My lovely Haynes manual specifies SAE 140w. Upon looking at my Ford manual I see it says ESP-M2C83-C which is 80w.

Thanks for the clarification Chad.

Set the Haynes manual on fire. Only useful thing it'll provide.

type F is correct for the C-6. In fact, type F will work in any auto tranny. I run it in my nissan and my buick. They just have different friction modifiers in them. The new fluids are made to make the trannys shift smoother/go to hell sooner. Use 80-90w in the trans and 30 weight in the NP205 t-case.

cheers!

Uh...the correct info was already posted above. Why spew crap now?

As to your post...INCORRECT.

1976 and earlier C6s uses Type F.

1977 and later C6s uses Mercon (originally Type CJ, but was superseded by Mercon). Now Mercon is gone as well, replaced by Mercon V.

Like I said above, the transfer case uses SAE 50W motor oil or 80W90 gear oil.

Just about any heavy gear oil will work for the transfer case, 80w-90, 75w-90, 85W-140 etc.

Type F was only used in C6's thru 1976.

From the 1973/79 Ford Light Truck & Passenger Car Parts Catalogs:

XT-2QDX = Automatic Transmission Fluid "MERCON"

For use in 1977/ Ford C6 & C4 transmissions.

You are just asking for trouble...if you mix different types of ATF.

Not to Pi$$ on anyone's wheaties, or add confussion, but I changed the fluid and filter on my 77 F150 300 I6 / C4 this past November, and used Type F fluid, which the auto parts said was correct, and I researched, and found to be correct also. This past week I got the shop manuals for 77 Ford truck and on page 17-01-4, GENERAL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICE left side column it reads.

Before adding fluid, be sure that the correct type will be used. If in doubt, check the Vehicle Certification Label affixed to the left front door lock face panel, or door pillar for the transmission code.
The C-4 Automatic and the FMX Automatic Transmission use transimission fluid meeting Ford specifications ESW-M2C33-F (type F). Certification is evidenced by the following information appearing on the fluid container. FORD, qualification No. 2P-XXXXXX, ESW-M2C33-F.

For C-6 Automatic Transmissions use fluid that meets Ford specifications ESP-M2C138-CJ.

I know the original poster was asking about a 78 C-6, and I am refereing to a 77 C-4, but does the above ESP-M2C138-CJ refer to MERCON for a C-6?

CAUTION: USE OF A FLUID OTHER THAN SPECIFIED ABOVE COULD RESULT IN TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTION.
Install the dipstick, making sure it is fully in the tube.

The following is VERBATUM from the 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog and the 1973/79 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalog.

MOTOR OILS and LUBRICANTS

XT-2QDX Automatic Trans Fluid "MERCON" -for 1977/ C6, C4 A/T only.

XT-1QF Automatic Trans. Fluid Type "F" -for FMX, C3 and 1973/76 C4 and C6 A/T's only.

The problem with shop manuals is...they were usually printed before the new models were introduced, and were revised...maybe once.

Parts catalogs were updated four times a year, which in this case inre to the 1977 info, the catalogs were updated 12 times thru the end of 1979, and 31 more times, since the last printing of these two parts catalogs occured in October (truck) and November (car) 1988.

If there were errors, the info would have been corrected years before these parts catalogs reached their final printing.
