Thanks Bill, this makes perfect sense. Two more questions then, is my manual wrong, or did Ford revise the fluid to MERCON from the original type F? Lastly where can I get one of those parts catalogs? I am guessing it is on CD? Yeah I know thats three questions, but I appriciate your impute.

Since the catalog listing for A/T fluids doesn't list a (truck) serial number or (car) production date change, MERCON was used from the beginning of the 1977 model year run.

My guess is, you have an early edition of the '77 shop manual. There should be a printing date on the front or back cover or at the bottom of the first page.

The 1973/79 Ford LIGHT Truck Parts Catalog is available on a CD from hipoparts.com

Make sure you get the LIGHT truck parts catalog, the heavy catalog is F600 and larger trucks.

When you get the parts catalog, in the TEXT...look for the Paint Section.

Scroll thru the pages till you come to APPEARANCE & MAINTENANCE MATERIALS section, then look for the fluids.

I wonder if it is best to 'flush' a tranny that is so old. I have heard good things and not so good things after a flush.
