I finally have the truck painted the engine rebuilt and I am getting ready to put the 390 and C6 back in the truck. I am intending to mate the engine and transmission, and then install as one unit unless I you all think that is a bad idea. While rebuilding the engine I used a book by Steve Christ “How to Rebuild Big Block Ford Engines” (after I had already torn down the engine). The book says I should have marked a stud on the torque converter in relation to the flywheel; I didn’t do that of course. So is there a procedure to reinstalling the torque converter? Is it a balance thing? Am I just screwed? Any help would be great.
<O</O Thanks,
There is a drain plug on the converter that needs to lineup with a corresponding hole in the flex plate (it's is not a flywheel). That's why you need to mark the converter bolt.
The nuts do not need a lot of torque, and you should make sure that they are the original or equivalent as I think they are self-locking with a plastic bit embedded internally in the threads. When I last did this stuff, I would make sure the orientation of the TC and flex plate were on a common clock point, such as the 6pm position, as it is not much fun to try to manipulate the TC forward and line up the stud/hole at the same time. A lot easier to put it in already clocked.
