hi,i have a problem with the left spindle arm on a 52 f-1,the threads are messed up and the castle nut just spins, won't tighten and won't come off.it is put on backwards, with the castle end towards the spindle, guess i'll have to cut the nut off.i need to find another spindle arm to put on.does anyone have a different idea?
Yep cut the nut, and maybe, it depends on how bad the threads are wrecked. I had a rear tapered thread axle on a dodge car that the threads where cross threaded and a machinist lent me and I latter purchased something called a Buckingham (I think) thread restorer, sold under other names also. It works from the inside out with a guide wheel and set of cutting wheels to repair the threads, if they are completely gone you’ll have to a get a used spindle from a darksider (see they are good for something).
Personally, the thought of restoring threads on something that holds a wheel on is a little scary, even with a cotter pin. If the nut was cross-threaded, replace the spindle. I can't think of any other reason for the nut to spin on the spindle. There should be plenty of spare spindles from the Darksiders who have removed the stock suspension -- they are our best source for cheap OEM parts... hopefully one will chime in here. If not, post a "Need driver's side F-1 spindle" ad on the Swap Meet Site (top of forum)
