I have a 2004 5.4 motor. The engine light just popped on, its a P0455, which is an evap light, says gross leak. The light is not due to gas cap, that has its own code. I know what to do with evap problems, BUT are there any usual culprits with this 5.4 system? I am so sick of this evap crap, I just finished pulling my hair out with my beater car evap light. Thanks guys.
Well I just did a google of "P0455" and its says to remove/re-install gas cap, but my book of codes says the cap has a separate code. I know the gas cap trick to remove/re-install *or* replace, is always first thing to try, so ill do it anyways.
Haven't really heard of any big issues with the evap system on the SD's.
Broken hose, loose hose, rotted through filler neck, gas cap (of course), etc.
Just because their is a separate code for the gas cap doesn't mean the cap can't make a "gross leak" code. These SD's are trucks and are not as stringent on their OBD-II compliance, and as a matter of fact, they aren't required to be OBD-II compliant until 2007 or so, even though the 2005 and up are.
Here's some good reading on it, and you can find the link for the 2004 document here too:
