Well here's an odd one, a full glowplug circuit of 2 minutes equals harder staring and a whole lot more spoke that a 10 second cycle easy starting and little amount of smoke, how does that work? I know my seals are bad but how does warmer plugs equal hard staring?
Weak batteries or corroded connections can cause it. It may be draining the batteries so
far down that the engine is turning too slow to fire up right away.
The longer it cranks = more un-burned fuel = more smoke on start up.

I agree with Jim. If the batteries aren't tip top the GP's will pull the batteries down too far. It will even sound like its cranking well but you will be surprised how much better it will be with good batteries. Check the terminals and have the batteries tested. I have had plenty of batteries that test pretty good but still not start the truck well.
i very much agree with you but the thing is, there very good and only about a year old, i know age isnt much but it cranks pretty quick, brandnew starter too, im around several 7.3s and they all crank about the same as mine? doesnt matter how long i leave the plugs on for cranking speed is the same dead cold or long plug cycle.
I just re-read your original post, I may have misunderstood.
It's rare the GP's stay on for a full 2 minutes unless it's very, very cold. The WTS light goes off before the GP's are cycled off. If you are waiting 2 minutes (timed) the GP's may have cycled off and cooled before you attempted to start it.
Watch the volt meter. When it starts to climb up the GP's have cycled off...then start it.

alright i guess that might make sense, this morning was a cold one over night so i figured id run out side turn the key to warm the up, run back inside to get my backback then back out to start it, and it was a hard starging hog, never smoked that much, i usually just wait for the WTS light to go off, but i was always under the impression that there was an automatic 2 minute standard on theplugs, and the volt meter does the same everytime, just belive the N then 30 seconds later its back right up the the A
with the heater fan and radio off you can wait aand hear the gpr click off and the volt meter will move at the same time. then start at that moment. i usually watch the clock and it takes close to 1 1/2 minutes after you turn the key on.
Steve, it's a 90 second timer on the gpr which would be about a minute thirty sec. So anymore than that and the plugs are cooling down. Did you get that muffler outta there yet?

There is no pre-set time for the GPR on time
Things I've learned from this site
The GP system is self regulated. The PCM turns them on and off.
The 'on time' (2 minutes MAX) varies with engine oil temp (EOT) and barometric pressure (BARO). The time decreases as the EOT and BARO increase.
They will turn off when the battery voltage gets too high...no matter what the EOT and BARO says. (Melt-down protection)
The GP's always come on when the key is switched on in pre 97 engines. 97's and up will not come on if the EOT is above 131ºF.
The Wait To Start (WTS) light on time is independant of the GP on time. It stays on about 10 seconds.
ive been sticking to just the WTS light and its been much better and much less smoke, cant wait to do the injector seals! and no i havent been looking for the the piping much, mihgt have t resort to junk yard for the 2ft of pipe
