I have a 1965 f100 short bed that I am interested in putting some state of the art suspension under. Is their a good "kit" on the market or will I need to swap frames and suspension from a newer model vehicle and if so what will work?
There are a few different options out there...the front end is all but a direct bolt in thru 79...many do this due to the inheritance of disc brakes. As far as the suspension itself...if you wanna go with modern steering and all that kind of jazz...avoid those Mustang 2s...all they are is a reskinned Pinto...
IMO, leave the suspension itself alone...gives a good ride loaded or not...
Theres a lot of different four links for the rear end if thats what you mean by state of the art. You can buy new springs, leafs, shocks, etc... but thats probably not state of the art. Maybe we could use a little more info. You wanting air bags or what? There is a guy with a pro street setup on here that may have something state of the art.
You may want to take a look in the ( 48--60 ) Forum, the have a 4/Link thread over there
about every week, they have installed some real state of the ART stuff over there!
You also Might look a mwvdub member here he has a build thread in the 73--79 dentside Forum, he built his truck with ladder bars, he did a real pro job on it!
P.S. nothing state of the art stuff under my truck, but I did do it using all FORD stuff,
the leaves are now inboard of the frame, although not everybodys CUP OF TEA ,
Now, my 69 mach 1 has a 4/Link coil overs 9in 486 all ( Round Tube Chassis ) strut front end fiberglass front clip and doors ( still a brand New Drag car)

I second the above statement on using the 03+ CV front end. I am almost done swapping one into my `61 and have under $200 into it so far.
Hi Fomoco,
Where did you score the CV front end for under $200? I just got a quote for $600 for an 05 complete with brakes, R&P, hoses, etc. Would love to find one for less.....
Do the work yourself, and pull one yourself like I did. It`s not hard at all.
I will definitely do my own installation but I haven't found a "pull it yourself" salvage yard that has any late model CV's. I'll keep looking. Even at the $600 I was quoted, it's still a lot cheaper than a Mustang II kit or many other options.
I was looking more towards using a newer f150 frame with the front and rear suspension. When I bought the truck a couple of months back it already had disk brakes on the front off of a 77-79 Ranger. I just didn't know if it was feasable to install an f150 on the underside or not.

I don't know much about the newer F150 chassis but I can't imagine that fitting your body to that chassis would be very easy. Especially when you consider that the 03-09 Crown Victoria front suspension appears to be a "bolt in" situation on these trucks and it gets you big disc brakes, R&P steering, lower stance & nice ride. There's also an inexpensive kit to adapt the 93-98 Lincoln Mark VIII IRS into these trucks pretty easily. That combination should give you a pretty state of the art truck I think, and you don't have to mess with trying to re-fit the body onto a different chassis......just a thought.....

It would be nice to be cheaper but at least for $600 you show up and pick it up and don't have to spend time disassembling which would probably take a few hours. What is your time worth? Sometimes it is just easier to go the easy route.IMHO.

I totally agree! I'm sure that's what I'll end up doing if I make this swap. It's hard enough to find time to work on my project as it is....
