The Boss motor was a windsor block with Cleveland 4V heads on it, the whole rotating assembly was forged and it used a solid roller cam and a 780 cfm carb!! The motors were factory rated at 290hp but this was strictly for insurance purposes and to keep the competition guessing, these motors dynoed at well over 400hp. As already stated the combination of a relatively small displacement motor with hugh heads and carb resulted in something that was almost undrivable unless the tach was above 4000rpm.
Technology has come a long way so you can now build a motor that makes at least as much power with modern heads and induction, and it will have much better drivability. But a high revving 302 is still a poor choice for a truck unless it's strictly a play toy and is geared appropriately, cause it won't get anything that could be confused with fuel milage.
