I've got a notion to cut one open and see if there's anything to be seen inside one of these little puppies... if someone wants to donate to the cause let me know.
I wish I had one for you, Chase. As soon as I saw your post title, I knew what you were up to. That would be some really interesting information you might be able to discover inside that little rascal... escpailly if you could get both a "gray" and an "old black".
When I was talking with Clay (CharGriller) he was asking why they fail so often... I didn't have an answer and thought maybe cutting one open would shed some light.
perhaps it's the distance between the sensor wheel and the sensor that is also a problem, resulting in a weak signal that the computer rejects (below some threshold)

I installed a variable ignition timing bracket on my 99 mustang that uses a similar sensor but on the crank. the gap between the toothed wheel and sensor was set with a feeler gauge.

That was my thought after experiencing a speed sensor problem in the rear diff of my motorhome. After several sensors i found out that the gap was to great.. I bought a new sensor and took it to work on the Lathe. Cut it down .018 so it would go in deeper to the gap specs listed. And then it was fine after that. Don't know why things changed or why the gap increase (rust?) but it did. I thought about playing around with the air gap with a cps. I use Prox sensors all the time at work with gap settings and got me thinking.
Chase, I have all 3 varieties.. Blue, black and gray..
I have messed with them too, the blue had a strong enough magnet to pick a kitchen knife up off the table into the air. The black will lift it up, but won't pick it up off the table before letting go. The gray one has such a week magnet it barely even moves the knife at all..
Might be able to give a couple of International repair shops a call and ask someone who works on them. Another option would be to ask the folks in the International Parts department, but that info would be skewed by PSD owners who have purchased CP sensors there.
