302 computer compatibility

Hey guys. I know there is a wealth of knowledge on this site so I know the answere I will get will be the right ones.

I have a 96 mass air bronco with a 302. I want to swap in a 351 but I've read that since I have mass air stock, I can use my existing computer to run the larger engine. Is that true? What all would I have to do in order to insure compatability? My 302 is getting old and tired so I want to get the jump on and get all of my parts together.
Thanks for all of your help.

your 302 computer will be fine.

I would find a complete 5.8 for this swap to make it easier on you. not much of anything except for the harness will transfer over from your 302 just an fyi.

Only real difference between the two engines from an electronics standpoint is the absence of the KS (Knock Sensor) on the 351. The mass air sensor will simply feed the new volumetric information to the PCM and in turn the computer will compensate.

So does that mean that I'd have to have a chip custom burnt or will it just be plug and play except for the knock sensor? I understand what all is required to complete the swap except for the computer, so I apologize if I'm not understanding exactly what your saying. Thanks for the help guys

The computer won't care. If it gets no knock sensor input it won't adjust anything and since the 351 didn't use a knock sensor and there isn't one present, the computer just won't get that input which is fine... it doesn't need it for the 351.

Didn't mean to cause confusion, just mentioned the KS because you will come across it when you pull the 302 but won't find one on the 351. Just didn't want you to worry that something was missing or needed when you discovered a minor difference between the two engines' electrical systems.

You just need to make sure your mass air sens. and injectors are rated the same.

both 19hr, or such
