HELP! 79 Vacuum Advance Problem.

Guy's I need some help on this. Here is what I have done so it will give you all a better idea. I have a 79 F100 with a 302 Auto. My 79 302 was very tired so I bought a 91 302 out of a crown vic. I stripped all the stuff off the 91 302 and used just the block and heads. I took what I needed off the 79 302 and put on the 91 and put it back in my truck. The problem I have now is when you hook up the vacuum advance the motor dies. It will not start back with the vacuum advance hooked up either. But you can unhook it and leave it unhooked and the motor runs fine as far as idle and reving it. I took it out on the road and I think it should have a bit more power than it does. My ignition system in new also. Everything worked great when I had the 79 302 in the truck, so it makes no sence to me why it don't work now. Any help or idea's I would like to hear. I have tried everything I know. Thanks Scott

Check three things: base timing (with a timing light - no exceptions!), check which vacuum source you're using (ported or manifold, in most cases it should be ported) and finally, verify that the advance holds vacuum. While you're at it, take a look in your distributor and make sure that the wires to the pickup module and the ground wire are intact - it almost sounds like the advance is shorting something out when the rod moves.

I do have it on ported vacuum and the advance holds vaccum. I checked to see if it held vacuum first b/c that is what I thought it could be. My base timing is 8 or 10 degrees. I'll check that again to make sure. Haven't really check the wire's good so I will check them also and the ground. That is exactly what I was thinking that it is grounding out or something in there is closing all the way off. I'll check these things and get back with you on this. Thanks for the idea's. Scott
