I have a 79 F100 that had a 302 that needed alot of work. For less money I bought a 91 model 302 tha ran good and I used the block from the 91 and put all the parts off my 79 on it. The block was shot on the 79 302. What I had to do was put the fuel eccentric on the 91 so my 79 manual fuel pump would work. Had to use the 79 timming chain cover to of course. So I put the fuel pump in and it will not pump at all. It did work on the 79 302 b/c I drove it. Is it possible that I put the fuel eccentris on wrong, honestly I don't see how you can. I dont think the fuel pump rod is to short but that is what it seems like. I'm running a electric fuel pump on it now so I can drive it. I'm going ti have to upgrade that one to b/c a $50 fuel pump don't last very long. Any help on the manual fuel pump would be great. Thanks Scott
Put a couple short lengths of hose on the manual fuel pump, then stick those into a pan of gas or solvent while working the arm by hand to check if it works. It's pretty stiff to work by hand so hold the pump tightly.
To check if the camshaft eccentric is working the arm properly, bolt the pump on but leave it a little loose and see if the pump gets rocked as the engine is turning over.
Manual fuel pumps are a lot less troublesome than electric ones in my experience.
No I didn't put a longer pin in the cam gear. It does have a line up pin on it so I screwed the fuel eccentric on and did line up the pins that makes it stay in place. I'm going to try to loosen it up today and see if the fuel pump moves. If it don't then I'm going to have to take the timing cover off and see whats going on. I'll get back with you guys on this. Thanks for the help and info. Scott
I was checking the fuel pump today and was going to take it off to get a closer look. The metal line the runs to the carb from the fuel pump had a hair line crack in it about 2 inches long right in the bend where it was hard to see. I did a vacuum test on it is how I found it. So The manual pump works great and I drove the truck all day today something I haven't been able to do in a while. So I want to thank all you guys for your help and info. I'm going to work on my dads 55 tomorrow, which the problems I'm having with it is under the y-block section. Thanks again for the help. Scott
