Towing with an I6

I have a 95 F150 with a 300 six, 2.73 rear, and a m50d 5 spd. I would like to tow a 3500lb cargo trailer with this truck. What should I do? Swap the rear to a 3.55? Does it matter that I have 31x10.50R15 tires on it?

Sounds like your lower rear end ratio and over sized tires are going to be a problem at least at highway speed bucking wind. On the other hand, what rpm do you get at 70 mph in 3rd gear? About 2900? That would tow it pretty good. I don't think there is any reason you can't tow in 3rd. (I tow in 4th with standard size tires and a 3.08 with my Mazda 5spd and turn about 2600 at 70, but wind resistance kills me in a head wind.) The only problem then would be if 1st gear is low enough to start out without frying the clutch over time.
