How do you get the fan off? Is it a right hand thread or left? I managed to remove the water pump with the fan still attached. I'd still like to get the fan off. F350 7.3 L diesel.
I don't know about yours. I went to the local Winchester Auto Parts and asked if I could look at a water pump for a '91 F350 7.3L diesel. It is a left hand thread. CW to loosen. Then I found out I need a 1 7/8 wench. I found a Ford fan removal tool at Kragen for 25 bucks. Basically a 1 7/8ths stamped steel wrench and a tool to hold the pulley from turning. After I finish my beer, I'll go out and tackle this thing. Wish me luck. I think it is on there pretty tight.
A serpentine belt(92 to today) has right hand, 91 back has left hand. I got a piece of steel and a torch and cut a 1 7/8 wrench. I made it long enough to stick out above the engine bay, then I can just hit it to the left with a 2x4 and it will pop loose.
Lo and behold. The Ford fan tool didn't fit, too small. I did like you did and made a wrench and have been whackin on it for awhile. I tried heating it with a propane torch. I tried liquid wrench. Then it was time for dinner. So far the fan is winning. There's always tomorrow.
BTW the one I am working on is not in the truck. It's the old one I took out. Bench work.
