HELP!! fan/water pump problem

ok i have a '92 f150 4.9 I6 and the bearing/whole water pump went out yesterday so im trying to take the fan off but the big nut connecting the fan assembly to the water pump and bearing in it will not come off. we have tried every angle ,every way and everything imaginable...is there a special tool or a certain way we can get the fan off without pulling the whole radiator? or is there any way to get the fan off easily?

It's "Special Tool Time" there is a tool that you need to remove the fan from the water pump. You're local parts place may rent you one. One tool holds the water pump, the other is a wrench to turn the facn clutch.

Ummm....no it's not.

The easiest way to get them off is with an air chisel. Just hit a couple of times and it will spin right off. I have had success with big channel locks on the fan and a prybar holding between the pulley bolts to hold it, but that's a pain. The special tool is the way to go if you don't have an air chisel.

Hate to tell ya silverstreak. But left hand threads is whats on my 1985 engine in my truck. However if it has a reverse rotation pump it just might be RIGHT hand threads. But with Ford it ain`t no telling. You DID know that that some moron in the design section of Ford changed the thread size on the fan from IIRC 33 to 34MM.With of course NO service bulletins or any other notice to dealers or anyone else.

The serpentine belt systems are right hand thread. Many of the fan shrouds even have that molded into them. I'm guesssing your 85 has V-belts.

V belts it is.Also like I said, look out for the thread size change. It WILL make you talk to yourself. And actually, the truck is an 84,but when I finally found a GOOD engine for it,it turned out to be an 85 that had been recently rebuilt at the Ford remanufactoring place in Louisville Ky.So I`m guessing that the engine only has about maybe 15,000 miles on it.

it IS RIGHT HANDED threads but i got the "fan removal wrench" and the "pulley holder wrench" and it came off with a breeze. the one wrench is like a square wrench that goes over the 4 bolts on the pulley to hold it in place while the other loosens the fan.

My 91 had a big sticker on the fan shroud that said "LEFT handed thread". It was right handed. I would not trust any Ford truck to be one or the other unless I had already taken it apart.

Get the tool. Even with it, it's a bear. Every time you start the engine, you tighten that bolt a little more until it's on there so tight you're lucky to get it off.

My 94 and my 95 both have the molded-in "left hand thread" message on the shroud and both actually are. I've fought, cussed, rigged etc trying to avoid the special tool. Last time I went to AZ and borrowed it. Off in about a minute. If I have an extra few bucks in my pocket next time, I'll be buying one to keep.
