O.K. first off this is an '89 Mustang but you guy here give more rational advise than most Mustang forms.
I have an '89 Mustang in pretty good shape but I recently noticed an exhaust leak. Climbed under it today and found the flange connecting the header to the cat pipe had rusted away. Both pipes are in good condition but the oblong flange was totally gone on one side and barely there on the other. I didn't know how I was going to fix it but knew I had to at least get it off. Well the dang bolt fron the header snapped off leaving no threads left.
Any ideas on how to fix this? I've got time and tools but no welder yet. If not how big a deal is this for a shop to fix? I'm guessing/hoping it just an easy weld on a new stud, install a new flange, and tighten it up.
I'm not against new headers and a whole new system, just not right now.
I did some looking today and realized I can easily drill out the stud I broke off. My follow up to that is do they make any sort of flange I can install around the pipe going to the catalytic converter but below the belled out portion of the pipe? I don’t know if I’m explaining that right. Basically the flange rusted out. I can’t just simply slip another one on because the pipe bells out on the one side and the catalytic converter is on the other side. Do they make a flange that clamps together around the pipe, then can be bolted to the opposite flange or header?
Or am I stuck taking it to the shop which is going to be my plan come mid week.
Yes, most exhaust shops will carry it. Called either a repair flange or fix it flange from our suppliers. It comes as 2 pieces that you bolt together around the pipe, then slide it up and bolt it to the header to hold the pipe tight. We have several styles at work that work on escorts and others with this design.
