My E4OD died.
About two weeks ago it started shifting a little harder than normal, and would shudder and surge when I put it in reverse.
A week later it started shifting harder and would surge every time I came to a stop unless I dropped it into neutral, then it would idle fine. It would also die if I put it in reverse at idle.
On wednesday of this week, it left me stranded and wouldn't stay running in drive or reverse unless I tached it up to about 2k and then dropped it into gear. Not a pretty sight with a crew cab, long bed F350.
I know I should have suspected the tranny problem earlier and maybe taken measures to fix it, but I've been too busy with home remodeling to take the time.
I checked the fluid, and it was reddish gray and smells burnt. Plus it was about 3/4 of a quart low. The line to the cooler had a small leak at a hose clamp and had a very slow leak probably only while driving.
Any clues on ways to diagnose the prob' through trouble codes? I'm pretty sure it's an EEC-IV system and not an OBD-II system.
I already disconnected the battery in hopes it might clear some faulty sensor readings, but engine still stalls when put in any of the drive gears.
I even tried it with the electronic overdrive off, and also in 1st and 2nd with OD off. No change.
Pretty confident that the tranny is toast, unless you guys know of something else I can try to diagnose to pinpoint the prob'.
Any advice on a rebuild? Or am I better off buying a used/rebuilt tranny? I'm wlling to rebuild it myself, unless I need a bunch of special tools that I'll never use again.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.<!-- / message -->
Did you pull the codes before you erased them??
Why did you think the computer would give you faulty readings?
I suppose if you drive it again, you will get the codes back, but risk damaging your tranny further, if it's not already too late. I do home renos also, but if you got no truck, you can't work. It would have been better to address the issue when it started.
What I suggest is posting this in the transmission forum as you may get a little more specific knowledge there. However, they will likely want to know the codes if any that the transmission is tripping first.
