Turbo failure symptoms

I have an o4 250 psd that had the turbo fail at 30k and was replaced under warranty. The truck just lacked power on the highway and was brought to the dealer the next day. They replaced it and I had no futher issues. Well it's out of the 5yr warranty (71k) and while towing a 10k load today was doing some interesting things which i think are turbo related. When the turbo spools up it seemed to bleed off thru the waste gate and make a sound from the three stooges. I've seen a report that that's ok if you get on the pedel and suddenly let off to let the pressure bleed off. During the trip today I was accelerating up a slight hill and got on the pedel and it seemed to bleed off. It also seemed slugish at times. Now I take very good care of this truck I follow all mantinence instructions, run full synthetic oils etc. I don't let it idle for long period and drive it daily on the highway. Why would a turbo start to fail in these conditions? Do you think there mayba a warranty on the turbo? Should I go buy and extended warranty before this turbo fails altogether? I'd like to get rid of the truck for a newer unit but with truck values in the tank I'm to upside down for that at the moment. Is it possible the vanes just need cleaning? I see no smoke on start up of anthing unusual.

That sound is known as turbo fart.It is very good chance that a cleaning will help you out. That said ford now has a updated turbo that has a ring machined out of it to help reduce sticking. The turbo is iron and prone to rust if unused (71000 miles in 5 years is not much use) there is also an updated flash that cycles the turbo at idle to help reduce sticking. The powerstroke has a 100000 mile warranty so check the date it was put into service, you might have some time left on it..

The warranty is up the truck was purchased in late 03. Does the tuebo need to be removed for cleaning?

The 6.0 does not have a waste gate. This is a long shot but check for leaking or torn CAC connectors. It sounds like the turbo is working but you are losing the boost pressure.

When I let my truck sit for about a week or so it does the same thing. It definately seems that the veins are sticking. Mine will usually free up and I just clear the code. I do have guages so I pay real close attention to boost and EGT. If you dont have gauages and your turbo sticks you need to be REALLY careful.

As stated above I would check your CAC tubes to make sure they are tight and none are torn or popped off. To be real sure you can take them apart and clean both surfaces real good with some brake clean and then re install, retorque the clamps and see if that helps.

If you do need to clean the veins, you will need to remove the turbo. I am assuming that the check engine light hasnt come on to help you diagnose the issue.

Brickie posted a link on the VGT I will find it and post it here. It goes through the cleaning procedure for you.

Hope that helps you some,

Sarge

Thanks for all the quick replies. What is a cac tube? Is this common for the vanes needing cleaning on a daily driver? I was under the impression that this was more of a weekend hauler issue. I'm in now way a mechanic but very inclined, is removal of the turbo some thing I can do myself with hand tools? I know it's in a tough spot. Is there something I'm doing to cause this? I've got no check engine lights on and none came on last time the turbo failed. I should mention the truck is bone stock. So should I pursue a warranty? If so which one?

Here's a bit of an update. I took the CAC tubes off and all was clear. I've run the truck hard for the last couple of days and so far haven't been able make it happen again. Any thoughts on what maybe going on? Should I bring it into the shop to see if there's any codes? I have no dummy lights on. Is it possible that too much boost was being created while towing up hill and just needed to bleed off? I haven't towed heavy in a while know I didn't have any issues last time.

You can have a code without the dash light. You need to put a reader on it.

Are you still considering taking the turbo off and cleaning it? I think it is still a good idea. The tech folder should have all you need to get it done.
