Hellooo - I have a 96 hightop conversion van. Its a 5.8. Do i have the E40D & is this the same as a 4R70W? If so....are they really good trans?
It does have the on/off button at the end of the shifter.
Should i put a trans cooler on? I looked at the radiator and its big, but looking at it closer i noticed that only 1/2 of it is used....is that how they came?.....I have a standard size tow hitch, but it does have a name on it, may have been put on.....dont know.
Also - I have a tach i want to mount, any suggestions on where?.....does anyone know what these tach out at, at 55mph....at 65 & at 70mph?
It's an E4OD. The 4R70W is a different transmission. The E4OD is a good trans, especially if it gets fluid changes every 30,000 miles.
There is a trans cooler in the radiator. Some also have another cooler out front of the radiator. You'll need to follow the trans cooling lines to see if you have both.
If your trans is getting too hot, meaning over 200F most of the time, then you need more/better trans cooling. I don't know what you mean about only haf of the radiator is being used.
Hi Mark - Thanks for the info. As for the trans cooler question, i read an article about most trans problems/orshortened lives of transmissions resulted from trans fluid overheating. Thats just what i read, im not saying its true or false, but having read that i thought i would check out my trans, i just bought this 96 hightop, with 46,500 on it. What i meant about 1/2 the radiator was: Looking at the rad, the top cover is big, as big as my 7.3/which is a 4 row. But after inspecting it, i think there are possibly only two rows being used. So im wondering if this is thick enough to have a sufficient trans cooler in it, or should i invest in a trans cooler.
You should invest in an external cooler, especially if you do any towing
Do complete flush of fluid. Go to the top of the page and link to articles and specs.
You will find a good write up on the procedure.
I have found the best cooler and price at the u-pull-it yards
I get my cooler from trucks or vans with heavy duty tow packages
These are designed and mount to factory brackets
