Hey everyone, got a quick question for you and hopefully I can get a quick answer.
My dad called me today and he has a '06 F-250 Diesel and he wants me to build him a grill guard for it.
Now I got a '99 F-250 V-10 sitting at the shop I thought I could take measurements off. The front bumper on the '99 is banged up and he wants to build a whole new bumper for that now.
So my question is, if I build a whole new bumper/grill guard combo off of the mounting points on the '99, will it be able to bolt to my dad's '06?
He lives 700 miles away from me and he probably would haul it back on his semi and install it himself, so making changes isn't really an option for me.
I've also thought of just building a grill guard that mounts to the tow hooks and the two bolts to the side of the tow hooks, which from what I can see of pictures on the net appear to be the same on both a '99 and an '06.
I'm not sure about the bumper mounts .. HOWEVER .. if you want to do any type of front end replacement, the grille changed in '05. The grille is a little taller (well more a the bottom) so if you fab it to fit against the '99 it will NOT fit against the '06.
Meet your Dad half way and exchange trucks... do it again when you are finished. Otherwise, that's like buying a diamond ring for Girlfriend_A when you plan on marrying Girlfriend_B. Ha!

Really? I didn't know all these companies like ranch hand and the types, you had to send your truck to them so they could custom build a bumper that bolts to your standardized frame.
My dad actually uses his 3/4 ton and needs it to get to his cattle, haul cattle, and tow and carry stuff. I forgot we're in the age of every yuppy who doesn't need a truck, owns a truck.

Thanks for the tip. I was aware of this and my plan was just to leave clearance enough so I know it would fit around his '06 grill. Will probably be a tube bumper so tolerances don't need to be tight. My dad won't care about looks near as much as me, just that its functional.
Just mainly need to know about the frames for them and how the factory bumper is mounted.
My stepdad built his so that the painted portion of the bumper screwed to the top of the bumper.. That allowed him to make the bumper with a flat deck... Might be an idea another one would to be find someone near you that has a 05+ truck and get measurements from that truck.... Ie used car dealer or a buddy
I don't know if they are the same but I just built a custom guard/winch mount for an '02 for a guy and made it to mount to the tow hook location with two bolts through the bumper to the inside to keep down vibration. You might be able to do the same thing but to determine if it will fit the later models look up several manufactures on the web and see if their items fit both '99 and '06, if they do then you know your '99 custom build will work on the '06. Besides being from Iowa I know that trucks are a dime a dozen in North Dakota and you got to know someone who has an '06 you could look at locally to verify or even trial fit. Heck you just might start a small local business.

Ok, I'm not sure what you are saying... I have never seen any aftermarket bumper manufacturer require that you deliver your truck to them to have a bumper fabricated. You merely look at a catalog (on-line) and select the pre-built bumper you want then they ship it to you.

In your original post, you said that you have a 1999 F250 V10 and your Dad has a 2006 F250 diesel. If you exchange trucks, can't you Dad use your 1999 F250 V10 while you are fabricating a bumper for his truck?
The V10 is not mine, it's my buddies. It's a super duty I have access to that I can get measurements off of and actually do fit up on seeing as he wants a bumper built for his too. With me not having too much experience around super duties, I was looking for information regarding the bumper mounts so I didn't have to go to a lot and get all sloppy messy crawling under one to look. For anyone wanting to know this information, yes they have 2 bolts on each frame rail that hold the bumper on.
We are both fabricators by trade we are designing this and making templates and jigs so it can not only be duplicated so both my buddy, my dad, and eventually me when I get a SD, can have bumper but we can make some extras to sell.
Soo my point being is that if other companies can make bumpers that can be ordered and bolted right on, then I should be able to build a bumper that will bolt right on with proper information.
Thank you guys who gave me real tips. When we make some more progress I'll be sure to keep you updated with pics.
there is a difference between the bumper and grill from the 99 & 06 truck. the bumper mount is in the same place but the grill locations are not the same. you can buy a 05 & up grill on e-bay to put on the 99 truck but the bottom of the grill is cut to fit inbetween the hood and the 99 bumper. so if your going to use the 99 for a mock up you will have to give a little more room for the bottom of the grill. maybe someone can post a picture with measurement of a 05 & up grill. take those and measure down from your hood and that should be where the top of your bumper should be. i hope i did'nt confuse you. it makes sense to me.post pictures when your done.

I highly suggest you take the extra 30 minutes to add a receiver to that front bumper. I have them on all my trucks, and anytime I get a new one that's the first thing I do. No end to their uses on a work truck!
Good luck!
The front frame bumper mounts and measurements are the same from 99-07. Only thing different is that the 06 has a crash bar located below the frame, it bolts from one spring hanger to the other, I think they added these in 01. So your 99 wont have this. So just make sure you build it so this bar doesnt end up getting in your way when you go to bolt it on the 06.
Spinella, most tube bumpers I'm finding follow the bottom of the headlights on a level line and go out in front of the grill, so we're building it the same, that way the height differences of the grills won't matter.
Old_Chipper, the one I'm building for my dad may get a receiver built in, but I doubt we'll design them with one.
a-rod, thats pretty similar to what we want to build. Do you have any pictures? How did you make the tubing oval? Judging by the background of your picture, you probably live in my dad's area.
