alright i got a 351w in my 78....not sure what its out of, but when i first got the truck i checked the casting #s and what i found out is a 76 torino....not 100% on that tho.....
its been bored .030, has a offenhauser intake and an edlbrock 600 carb, no headers....as far as i know thats all.....sounds a little lopey, so not sure if its got a cam in it or not
-my 1st ? is about heads....right now i have D5TEs, are these any good? i have a friend that has a couple sets of heads and im prob gonna get a set and do some porting in my spare time, dont know the #s yet, but he says he has 1 set of the older adjustable kind and 1 set of newer nonadjustable.......which should i get?
yeah theyre EB heads.....ill try to get the other #s.....if a set of them have bigger chambers, couldnt i get the heads milled down to compensate?......i would rather have non adjustable
Those D5TE heads are excellent. Do not replace them.
You can do some pocket porting to wake them up, maybe install larger valves, but those are excellent heads. I would love to have a pair.
In re: adjustable vs. non-adjustable, I would go for the adjustable, but make sure they're D5 heads.
In re: distributor, that's a nice option, but it would be cheaper to get a Duraspark setup and have it recurved. You can add the MSD to the duraspark later on when money allows.
In re: cam, with a degree wheel and a dial indicator, you can measure the lift and duration of the cam. I know that sounds obvious, but the question was likewise obvious.
Good luck.

Adjustable heads are not necessarilly better, those would have pressed in studs so they're actually weaker than the pedistal heads. The D8s are also smog era heads with 69cc chambers and 1.78/1.45 valves so they are a BIG downgrade from your D5 heads.
okay, im gonna be taking my D5s to the shop pretty soon and get em checked, then im gonna do a little porting on em.....i can have them changed over to nonadjustable right?
No, once a head is setup for studs that's it. The best thing to do with pressed studs is have them removed and the holes drilled and tapped for screw in studs.
