What solvent to clean differential?
I pulled the rear diff cover off my 2000 4X4 Expedition 5.4 177,000 miles and the oil flowed out like hot brown fudge. I really want clean the diff out well before the refill. What type of spray should I clean it with, Gunk Spray?? Brake Cleaner spray??? Thanks

either one will work. I am a cheapo so I use gasoline and a solvent brush.Good oportunity to put a small magnet in bottom of case before you install cover. Catches metal fines and keeps them from floating around in oil..
If the oil is contaminated, check the axle tubes. Your new, clean oil will bring any gunk in the tubes back into R&P and bearings.

Thanks for the good feedback all. I inspected the oil and while brown there were no metal shavings or other matter.
Any advice on flushing the axle tubes?
My thought was to change the diff oil again in a month or so to remove any left over crud.

I would wait till the hotter weather is here it will flow a lot better, only good way to really clean the axle tubes is to pull the axles. the heaviest of the junk should be in lowest spot which is your pinion pot. Probably seems thicker in the colder weather too.
