Post 94 Lightning minor problems

I just bought a 94 Lightning with 148k. The truck is in excellent shape but has a couple of small issues that my local Ford guru (they build race engines and run Winbston West) can't figure out. The only mods to the engine at this point are 24# injectors.

Transmission:
Problem 1: While driving at FW speeds (70mph or so) it will suddenly drop into 3rd. from overdrive for a split second. This appears to only happen while driving at the same speed for a while.

Problem 2: It will ocassionally shift really hard. The rest of the time it is as smooth as butter. One time while shifting from 2nd to 3rd it dropped back into 2nd then back to 3rd again. Around town I have been driving with the O/D off and the hard shifting does not seem to be happening again. However, I shouldn't have to run in Off mode all the time.

There was nothing in the OBD codes regarding the transmission.

Check engine light:
The check engine light goes on intermitently. There does not seem to be any pattern to it. When we ran the codes it came up with the right bank running rich. Drives fine. Unless something is really wrong it is more annoying than anything.

Idle at stoplights:
The idle will sometimes surge from 600-1000 rpm's repeatedly until I drive off. Almost as if something is turning on and off like the AC. However, the AC is not on.

Any experience with this out there?

Thanks, John.

you want the tranny to shift hard thats a good thing, you might also want to check the clutch fan to as for the surge thing the idle or the choke might be screwed up

It's not a good thing when you are at part throttle and your head hits the seat from a shift. There's definately an issue...

Thanks. I am getting the feeling from checking around that it is the Transmission Solenoid. Apparently it is quite common. So, I will try that.

94 Lightning minor problems

I have a 94...with 52,000 on it. Just spent about 619.00 on parts. O2 Sensor and Egr valve. These two things will cause rough running and stumble during accelleration. Use GOOD gas....mine only gets AAMCO Prem. I know its costly but it runs best on that. Change Trans fluid and filter about every 10000 miles. Real cheep way to keep the AOD working and use Injector cleaner once a month.Fee free to email me about problems.I have AOL. Hope this helps and have a great day

I don't know if you checked to see if it has a chip in it.
If it does sometimes it can come loose and cause a problem
similar to what you decribed. The truck should have 19# inj.
in it unless it was converted to mass air.
