You did not have to special order them.Untill 58 or 59 there was nothing but stepsides long or short.BTW Long bed stepsides were made well in to the 70`s perhaps even until `79.
Thanks for keeping my true. My uncle has a 55 that he wants to restore and he told me that you had to special order the long bed from the factory, so I was just copying his words.
well i got some good news. ny neighbor has a 91 f150 6 foot stepside. hes a umm... private under the table worker and he needs all the space he can get. he found another flatside bed at a junkyard in NY and he said he'll give me his od one for $50. just gotta get my uncle to stretch it for me cuz hes the one with the bodyshop.
The eighties stepsides are a steel bed with `glass fenders.
That makes more sense--I was surprised to hear that the box itself was fiberglass, but I can believe the fenders are fiberglas, though I did not know that, either. I like the fact that the fenders are 'glass, in terms of rust, but I would think 'glass box sides would not work out so well. So, IMO, it makes sense that the box itself is steel.
