air bag idiot light

The air bag idiot light on my instrument panel lights once in a while. I haven't been able to identify exactly WHEN it will light.

It blinks a code 27.

Then sometimes when I start it up, the light acts normally.

It started doing this right after I had a Sirius Sat radio installed. The installer was working in behind where that air bag key switch is located.

Suggestions?

Thanks

If it start after an install or work, I'd take it back to the person doing the work and ask them to look over the install. They might have left something loose or not well connected, but they will have a better idea of where they were working.

I know that is the logical thing to do, but frankly, I'm not willing to do that. I was so annoyed with their work on the sat radio. They did a couple of things I didn't like and just sluffed it off and would not fix what I wanted them to do. In my opinion they were just sloppy and I really don't want to give them another crack at my truck.

So, I'm gonna try to fix this myself. I think the first thing I'll need to do is make a radio extraction tool from a heavy coat hangar. I had one a few years ago, but it went away during a move.

I suspect when I take the radio out, I'll be able to get in there and see how it looks.

Ok, I'll try to imagine how I would do it and point you in some directions. The radio tool should have groove for the clamps to click to, I broke my clamps, so my removal method is to pull the dash out enough to push the clips in by hand and slide the radio out.

They most likely pulled this part of the dash to do the install (99-04 is easy, I suspect 05-8 is too). If they used a FM modulator, meaning you tune into a radio station to listen to the sat tuner, the modulator box either plugs into the radio where the antenna does, or it's a box somewhere near the antenna with an antenna of it's own or it's integrated into the controller. The easy way to get power is to tap into the fuses, the clean way is to build a harness and tap into the radio's. Some how they got power for the control and modulator. Lastly, they probably ran the sat antenna wire down under the glove box, and rolled it across the door seal at some point to get it outside, then up the windshield trim to the center of the roof.

Yup, I do believe that is what they did. I did see him soldering a connection somewhere in behind where the radio is.

I'll get the radio out tomorrow and see what's what.

I'm wondering if he knocked the air bag light a bit out of its socket. Maybe that's why its intermittent.

I'll report back here... Thanks

Well, reporting back...

My mechanic friend finally tracked down the source of this problem.

The fuse holder was loose! Apparently this is common problem and often causes this light to come on in random patterns.

Problem solved and thanks to all who helped.
