wing vent

I did a search and couldn't really find what i was lookin for, I need to remove the glass out of one wing vent and install it in another, is there a good way to do this? I was thinking either heat or a solvent of some sort, these are glued right? I would just swap out the whole unit but one post is totally rusted out. what is good for the install? glaziers putty? or some type of glue? I also need to glue some glass into my lift channels, same stuff?
Thanks pells

The glass is installed with double sided tape available from repro places cheap. Easy way to get the glass out is to leave the assembly mounted on the door and secure the door so it won't open on you. Then open the vent window all the way and grab the end of the glass with both hands and start pulling, rocking it top to bottom.

Another option is to hold the glass firmly and rock the truck.

Thanks, i'll see what happens. Do you use the same doublesided tape to mount your door glass in the channels too?!? dosen't seem strong enough.
If this sounds like a stupid question, bear with me. I'm learnin, and just want to do it right.

Same tape. I have used it. It doesn't seem like it would hold but it does, makes for a tight press fit in the channel. As long as the channels are clean and smooth there should be no reason to have a tight grip on the glass when the window is rolled down. I don't think the original was sticky just provided a tight fit.

Broke mine taking it out. The glass was so adhered to the tape and frame that it would not budge no matter what I did.

hI just did mine used a heat gun on the steel when it got little warm worked it back an fourth and slid right out . going back in was a more difficult. two diff size of tape went to a glass shop and they have a special tool to pull the glass in with. He said he's used gas on the rubber to install them. and it works good.

Maybe you could help it a little by running the blade of a utility knife down between the glass and channel first.

I haven't tried it but I was told to take it out of the truck and pour some lacquer thinner around the frame, let it set awhile and it will loosen the tape. By the way what is meant by double-sided tape? You don't mean with an adhesive on both sides do you? The glass setting tape I purchased at the glass shop was just a black tape without any adhesive. It held the glass firmly in place with friction by carefully forcing the glass into the channel. The tape was bent to form a "U", put around the glass edge, then the glass was tapped into position with a rubber mallet.

Unless you need to have the FoMoCo label on the glass, why not just get a glass shop to cut you a new piece and have them put it in?

I heard soaking them in gas works wonders.

You may be right about the sticky part, now I don't remember if it was or not. In my mind it was at least on one side. I don't have any left to go and check.
