Does the F-250/350's front & rear diffs have a gasket on the cover or just goop or both? Looking to change out the factory gear oil w/ fresh stuff. Also I see the front Dana 60 usues 80/90 gear synth, but would it hurt to put 75/90 synth gear weight? I know 75/140 synth in the rear.
Front and rears both use silicone, no gaskets. Not sure what to say about the gear oil other then it is best to use what is spec'd, atleast during the warranty period...
Silicone is all I have ever used, never seen a gasket on one but I havent torn in to the 08 yet.
I have used the 75w140 before. Didnt think about the warranty because it was a certified gear oil. I "think" so long as you dont use something like ATF or 5w30 in them you are probably OK. Thats my opinion, not necessarily a fact but then again I use 5W40 synthetic oil which my manual doesnt cover. Ford sells 5W40 synthetic, it meets the rating, etc but its not in the manual.
When using the friction modifier for the LS axle, I have heard that you take it real easy and give it a test drive to ensure you don't use to much and ruin the effects of the LS system.
I will use 75/90w Amsoil in the front (since I have some left over from my Dodge CTD) and keep the 75/140 in the rear like the maintenance book states. Even though I've run Amsoil newer 75/110 that works great for an in between 90 & 140 wieght.
Sucks that Ford does not use a reusable gasket for the diff covers. Makes things easier like my Dodge when changing the diffs.
