I think that the quality and style of the trucks has gotten so good that they really do need the quantity of sales they are used to to keep these trucks as nice as they are. Like you say the less they sell the less that cost is spread across each truck for R&D. I would hate to think how much a 09 f150 would cost if it was a one off and i would also hate to think how much they would cost if they were a limited run of 100k. If they don't get these sales back to what they used to be i can see our trucks going back to basics, extremely simple, cheap to produce models. They pulled the Mark LT for this exact reason. Far to expensive to produce and no where near enough sales.
Well Bsimmer, if that happens, at least we got ours.

We sure have lol. But they are going to have to counter this some way. It will be either price increase's(very possible), Quality decrease(cant see this my self), Model termination(again cant see this), Back to basic's(could happen if sales dont increase soon) Bye Bye platinum, king ranch and lariat.

Well trucks were always work vehicals, the SUV fad of the past decade made them popular with the masses.
Once gas goes up again this will change, the will become work vehicals again. Only people that need them will buy them.

One way they can counter this is to simply continue their current strategy of cutting production to match demands so they don't have to offer the monstrous rebates they have in the past. They may have to (and probably should) downsize their facilities to match the new demand levels. This way their production costs would be lower and they would make more on each vehicle sold.
Some of the comments on this thread and the one about March sales being down are perfect examples of the monster the automakers have created for themselves. They have made such a habit of selling vehicles at a loss just to move them that everyone has come to expect huge rebates. If you think back to just 7-8 years ago, rebates were not always around, and never were that much off sticker. Now, if rebates are not >$4000 people fuss because that isn't enough. I like a good deal as much as anybody, and this is really easy for me to say since I already have an '09 sitting in the driveway.
I agree that they don't have to provide extreme rebates but the thing that got me was going backwards after posting 40% decline in truck sales over last year (which was a bad year). I had hoped the rebates would hit 5K but would have been satisfied if I could have got the Q1 rebates with the extra $1000 but since we only drove ford products we didn't qualify. I don't know about other areas but here the dealers are taking rebates off list and not dealing any more. We had our order guide ready and paying majority cash and no dice.
Last night I picked up my new to me, 2007 Ford F250 6.0L Lariat Crew. I was looking at either Superduty or the new F150 if I could get the price but Ford lost another F-150 sale over $1000 and to be honest I believe everything happens for a reason and my reason for lost rebates was a 250. 12-15% of list price of a new vehicle does not work for me.
Congrats on your new truck. I'm sure you will really like it. My '04 SD served me well, and if I hadn't killed it, I would still be driving it today. The good deal I got on the F-150 at the time is a big reason I ended up in the 150 instead of another F-250.
I completely agree from a consumer standpoint that having large rebates is great. However, from the company's perspective, it makes more sense for survival to axe the big rebates and cut production to match the demand.

Congrats! Like I said earlier, a used truck sale doesn't do FMC a bit of good. Look at Tundra and Titan sales. Low or no rebates aren't helping them sell trucks. Americans want and expect a great deal, me included. All of my vehicles ar ein tip top running order. I can wait if need be.
Once a dealer figures out that your shopping, they will come around. It doesn't take a magician to find out if you've been looking for awhile. Be patient, the deals wil come.
I've bought several Fords from the same dealership, I depend on them giving me good deals and good trade in values vs depending on rebates.
Last week, for giggles, I checked in with my salesman about what kind of deal they would give me on a Platinum. I can get near employee pricing, $3000 cash plus $750 owner loyalty. Thats not a bad deal.
As much as I like the 09 and as bad as I'd love to support Ford right now, especially since they have not taken bailout money....I just got my 06 fixed up the way I want it, its still got low miles and I dont owe much on it...I just cant justify it.
