390--428????
Hi all........I recently puchased what I was told was rebuilt 390 from a 68 f100. needless to say it has some issues and yes i'm going though the bad areas. my question is the block casting is C7ME-A (428?)and the crank is a 2-U (390?) and it looks to be 4.13 bore with D2TEAA heads with smog holes ?. any info would be greatly appreciated.............Thanks

well the book says 428 block, but with 390 stroke that gives you a 405. Rebuilt seems to be a little of an understatement haha. How does it run? any problems or just curious as to what you have? oh and I'm guessing it's internally balanced but check the flywheel for a counterweight anyway, I mean it wouldn't be the first thing to surprise you right.

4.13 is a 428 bore, and the 2U crank is 390 stroke, so you are correct.
Interesting find.
D2TE-AA heads are the 1972-up truck heads, same as the 1968 C8AE-H castings with hardened exhaust seats (which aren't, after a valve job).
Check the exhaust (and intake) valve diameter, maybe someone put CJ valves in them.

Measure carefully. A .060 390 will show a 4.11 overbore. Look at the pistons they should have a size stamped/cast into them or at least a part number depending on the make. That should be a clue. The block can be a 390 or 428 with the C7ME-A. Not that the casting number makes a difference. You can look at the back of the block and look for the A or C sandscratch. That would sway things towards a 428 block. If it is a 4.13 bore and 3.78 stroke it's a 406(+) displacement depending on exact bore size. And the pistons would be sought after ($$$) if so. They are hard to come by. If original Ford 406 piston they'd be a TRW forged flat top. See what you can find.

I was under the impression that Ford called a 4.13" bore block with a 3.78" crank a 406 and produced that engine for several years prior to the 427. FFR428 is right, check the pistons as a .060" over 390 block is 4.11" which is real close to 4.13" with wear.

yeah you're right Bear, haha I got back on here, and re-read th post and was kinda dumbfounded. I thought well isnt that just a 406...and it is. Rough day, long night last night, still a little slow.
