Ok, I asked this Q on the 80-86 forum (https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...connector.html) and have yet to get a response, this is the more appropriate forum any hoo! (Thanks to their help I've found the Tach leads)
I'm working towards a tach install on my 86. (Any one got one they want to sell)
On the 6.9L the tach sensor is located in the IP drive housing. (Proper Name??)
What is on the IP drive gear that the pickup senses?
Would it always be there? (Even in Tachless versions)
2. Gear teeth are always there, obviously Sensor will not be there in a tach-less truck, but the gear housing may still have the provision for it, with a plug closing it off. I say may, cause many tach-less trucks had a smooth gear housing. There are actually three gear housings - an entirely smooth one with no oil fill neck and no sender provision, one with sender provision but still no oil fill neck, and one with both sender provision and oil fill neck.
If your gear cover has the provision for a tach there will be a plug in the top that takes about a 1" wrench. if the plug is not there you need a different gear cover and the tach sensor that goes in the hole that is plugged. I'm not sure if the wiring is in place or not.
Usually the sensors are allright if the insulation on the two wires is in good shape and guys here have bought them at wrecking yards for next to nothing. That probably depends on your location though as the wrecking yards here with no competition think their stuff is better than new.
