Sputtering and Grinding
Hello,
I have just joined the ranks of the proud owners of Ford trucks a couple weeks ago and I am a novice at best, you got to start somewhere right!The truck 76 6cyl 300 f100 stepside NP435 4spd 2wd.
I have two questions first, It sputtering, hesitating when accelrating mostly in 3rd and 4th gear timing, mixture, where do I start to diagnose? Second, it gets in to 3rd gear easy, every once in while it want to grind and down shifting from 4th to 3rd, forget about it want to grind all the time. What am I looking at, rebuild verses new one, does it cost abut the same. One more thing if I am in for a new or used trans, what do you about a 5spd and what kind? Any and all advice is appreciate. I would check the timing first and then rebuild the carb you have unless it is real bad. As far as the tranny i'm not much help with the 4spd. At least now I moved your post back up top so someone else can hopefully help more. Good luck and welcome to fte.

I just checked from drivetrain here in CO, complete rebuild your looking at 1,000 bucks...I have no idea about a new one, if you find out let me know! Also sounds like your syncros are bad for 3rd and 4th maybe? I learned the art of double clutching for downshifting otherwise mine is a pain in the **** to do too
