I have the same question in the engine section, but I'll ask here because I think more people see it. I want to put a new cam in my 390 since I have it tore down. I currently have a Crane cam 210 duration at .050 and .516 lift, single pattern. I want to put on the Edelbrock Performer intake, but don't like the cam. its only a 194/204 at .050 Does anyone have suggestion or a desktop dyno to try some different cams.?
I want low RPM, off idle torque mostly, pulling a trailer, quick moving. I don't want to buy the wrong cam again.
Try Crower for FE cams. Many, including myself, have one of the "Beast" series and are great for low end torque! There website is getting a new face and will be up within the month. Check them out at www.crower.com
Also, do a search on "crower" in this forum and the FE forum for other comments about the Crower series.
Crower Power Beast best cam i've ever used my FE's. Great low end and explosive mid range. I wouldnt ever put anything but a Crower Power Beast in any of them now.
Some of y'all sound like you work for Crower. What are the specs on these cams?
I've got the dual pattern Melling MTF-4 and it performs exceptionally inside my 390, 060 over, 10:1 CR, Performer RPM and Edelbrock 600 CFM. See specs below:
Dur. @ .050: 204 Int / 214 Exh
Adv Dur.: 282 Int / 292 Exh
Cam Lift: .280 Int / .295 Exh
Gross Valve Lift: .484 Int / .510 Exh
Center Line: 107 Int / 117 Exh
Buzzard, those specs look like the cam made by World Trade and sold through Wolverine, Melling, Federal-Mogul, etc. The ramps are mild and very forgiving. It is a refined version of the old CJ cam, great low-end torque and sounds just like the original.
Jammer, All,
Aren't most .5+ cams in the 300 degree duration area. That would not be condusive to a bottom end cam. Someone correct me, if necessary, but don't these big blocks get a bit unruly/unmanageable when you put these big cams in them? I would not exceed a 290 overall duration for day to day driving on a big block. Those type of cams are usually under .5 cam lift.
Jammer wants to tow. Buy an RV cam. Cam dynamics has done me right in the past. 290 duration with a .456 lift. You'll still loose a little bottom end but you'll be kickin on the highway. Get a second opinion, I didn't get paid for this if anyone is concerned about who I work for.
Good Luck, Have Fun,
KingFisher
