I have a 2002 F-250 Superduty with 113,xxx miles out it. I was pulling a trailer with a pretty heavy load and all of the sudden the check engine light came on.
I pulled over and the truck had a wierd idle to it but everything under the hood looked normal.
When I got home I unhooked the trailer and hit the road again. Still the same problem. It bounces and feels like the truck is going to fall apart between 1500-1900 rpm's.
I bought a code reader and plugged it in the right way (of course) and it said no codes. The check engine light is on and no codes???? Can anyone tell me why this is and anything I might check that is causing this problem.
It is a stock F-250, 113,xxx miles, 7.3L Turbo, just had turbo rebuilt less than 500 miles ago.
Welcome to FTE.
There is a lot of code readers that will not read the advanced Ford codes. A lot of those codes will turn on the light and the standard OBD scanners cannot read them.

With that said, from the sound of your description, and the track record of these engines, it sounds like the wiring harness under the valve cover has come unplugged.
Easy repair, but it requires pulling the valve covers.
Thanks for the quick reply. I forgot to mention that the check engine light comes and goes. Would you recommend I take it to Ford and have them pull the code(s)???
Do you have a chip or tuner in the truck? Just trying to rule things out. Either the Ford dealer, or an independent diesel repair shop should be able to pull the codes for you. The independent guy will probably do it quicker and for less $$$. You can buy your own code reader for about $350, or find a used superchips or edge programmer on ebay for $100 or so, so you may want to keep that in mind.
If you can catch the truck running bad when the light is on, you might be able to diagnose the loose plug Dan was referring to with an ohm meter, but usually the light stays on longer than you're describing with the loose plug. If yours is barely loose, it might not show up with the ohm meter.
If you've got time and don't want to pay for the mechanic, you could pull the valve covers and check things out visually? Let us know if you need any instructions or pictures on what to look for.
There is no chip or no tuner. The truck is stock! I just dropped it off at the shop and waiting on them to pull the codes. I didn't have time to do everything you guys told me but I tried most. I will keep you guys posted on the outcome. Thank you
