I am a newcomer to this forum. I have been towing light trailers (large popups mostly) with various vehicles over thirty years. My wife and I are thinking about ordering a new Supercrew in a few months as we like its overall size and length. It will have a 5.4 engine, towing package, automatic and 3.55 LS gears. We will be towing a new 4500 lb trailer, which includes contents. A few questions...how will 3.55 gears work out in hills, long grades or mountains? I am familiar with Ford's published 8000 lb. towing rates, but know from experience towing rates are under ideal conditions at best. I really prefer 3.73 or 4.10 gears and does anyone know if Ford will offer these gears as a 7700 package in future months? Second, are there plans to come out with an entirely new model 2003 Supercrew? Thanks for your help and input! Mike
Hi Mike,
The SuperCrew with the 7700 GVW package would be one sweet rig for your type of towing but unfortunately it hasn't happened yet, maybe because of the fear that some fool will try to put a fifth wheel in the 5' box.
For a bumper towed trailer the F150HD, as I call it, is a great tow rig for people who don't want the hugeness of the SuperDuty. Same 5.4L V8, same 4R100 tranny (not the 4R70W as in the regular 1/2 ton), heavy duty frame, 4 wheel disc brakes, LT tires on HD rims, and the same 3.73 axle ratio as the big brother. Even a heavier loaded trailer weight rating than a comparably equipped SuperDuty!
Haven't seen or heard anything yet about the 2003's but had hoped to be able to sell the 02 SuperCrew as an HD. Until Ford changes their minds you have two choices in that body style; 3.55 SuperCrew or 3.73 SuperCab HD.
Thanks, Roger, for your imput. If Ford would put the 3.73 axle on their Supercrews for 2003, I would wait to purchase one then. I have a 93 EB Explorer with the 3.73 LS axle I bought new and it really pulls well. I am a lost to understand why Ford does not offer the 3.73 as an option as there is quite a bit of difference in pulling power; perhaps at the expense of only 1 mile per gallon lost in economy. Half ton Chevy trucks are available with the 3.73 for only a small price difference and Ford could pull away these customers. Thanks again. Mike
