Hello, i have a tricky situation here, i have a 87 F.150, C6 4x4 with 3.55 gears. it had the carburated 351 H.O. in it, it had a edelbrcok performer intake and a carter competion series carb, anyway it took a dump on me, anyway, i have a 89 351 fuel injected with 55,000 miles on it, these are actual miles as i am a really good friend of the previous owner, anyway, ive been told i can take the entire intake manifold off the new one and put the performer on, put my carb on, so for the mechanicle fuel pump, is there a blockoff plate on it or am i going to have to put an inline fuel pump in the engine bay(i ask cause the new motor is still in the truck and it aint at my house) old motor is completely junk, rebuilding it is not an option
I would also like to freshen the motor up a bit, im going to regasket it, while its apart i would like to put a cam in it, any suggestions, this truck will see street and a little track use, i will be running pump gas but i want it to have a lopey idle, i know nothing about cams or durations of cams, im willing to buy a new intake setup for it to match the cam and i want to use as many stock engine parts as i can(pushrods mostly) It will have headers, upgrades ignition in the future, thankyou for your help
yeah the boss for the fuel pump is blocked off, use the timing cover off the HO. The fuel injected 351 may have a cam eccentric on it anyways, ford did that for a while. Stuff should interchange easily. I like the lunati voodoo cams.
The EFI timing cover does not have a boss for the mechanical fuel pump, and may or may not have the eccentric. The EFI motor likely has a serpentine belt and also uses a reverse rotation water pump so you'll need to swap the timing cover anyway if you want to use your V-belt setup. Both covers have the same bolt pattern and are completely exchangable.
ok, i forgot to ad that i would like to keep the serpentine belt setup off the new motor, i got a complete parts truck so i got all the accessories, and would it be easier to keep the fuel injection, to do this do i have to rewire the cab, how hard is this and has anyone ever done it
Honestly, stick with fuel injection in my opinion. Go to the junk yard and get a 5.0 MAF when you do swap, add bigger injectors and get it calibrated for the injectors and you will have one bad *** 351W. With a cam and slight tune from a local shop and you will have better fuel economy, less moving parts in a sense, and just over all better power band. Carbs are great dont get me wrong but there are reasons we have not gone back and neither have i once i did a custom fuel injection system.
You will need the ecu and all wiring that goes with it. If you are not good with wiring maybe just grab it and stick with carb and later on bump up when you have the knowledge and experience with it.
You have it much easier as your tranny does not require programming. Unlike my e4od.
But i kno my lightning 351W came with 19lb injectors, if i bumped them up to 40 i could get 100hp plus with a decent cam and tune. Proven with my buddies.
This is just my opinion so take it lightly, i know what i have done in the past with experimenting with both. A carb is more friendly tho with a lopy cam unless you go independent fuel injection because of certain sensors as well from what i have done.
What is your main goal though. If your power goal is low enough stick with carb, if not i prefer EFI as its more efficient.
